AfDB Funds $1.5M for Congo Energy

Key Figures & Findings: The African Development Bank (AfDB) has committed $1.5 million in grants to support energy infrastructure feasibility studies in the Republic of Congo. Led by Solomane Koné, AfDB’s interim director for Central Africa, the funding aims to modernize the country’s power sector. The initiative includes hydroelectric projects on the Congo River and an electricity interconnection between Pointe-Noire and Brazzaville, which is part of a broader effort to enhance regional energy access.

Statistics & Insights: The grant is expected to contribute to Congo’s energy modernization, supporting projects that could strengthen electricity supply and cross-border interconnections. Congo’s current electrification rate remains below 50%, with rural areas facing significant energy deficits.

Future Implications: If successfully implemented, these projects could improve energy access for millions of Congolese by 2030, reducing power outages and boosting industrial growth. Strengthening regional energy integration could also enhance trade and economic stability between Congo and neighboring countries.
