AfDB, Mozambique Advanced Wind Transmission

Key Figures & Findings: The African Development Bank (AfDB) has approved a $43.6 million financing package for the construction of the Namaacha–Boane Transmission Line in Mozambique, a major step toward integrating the 120-MW Namaacha Wind Farm into the national and regional grid. The project, to be implemented by national utility Electricidade de Moçambique (EDM) in partnership with Central Eléctrica da Namaacha (CEN)—a private consortium led by Globeleq Africa and Source Energia. Of the funding, $33.2 million will come from the African Development Fund, and $10.4 million from the Bank’s Climate Action Window, a key mechanism supporting low-income nations under the Paris Agreement. Mozambique’s government will also contribute co-financing to signal national ownership of the clean energy transition.
Statistics & Insights: The 66-kV dual 43-km lines will channel 332 GWh of wind energy annually, enabling over 71,000 tons of CO₂ emission reductions and powering thousands of new rural connections. Construction is expected to begin in 2025 under the “Mission 300” electrification initiative.
Future Implications: If completed on schedule by 2027, the project could serve as a blueprint for scalable public-private infrastructure financing across the continent.
