AfDF GRANTS $7.4M For 9.34 MW Hydropower

Key Figures & Findings: The African Development Fund (AfDF) has approved an additional $7.41 million to complete Liberia’s Renewable Energy for Electrification project, ensuring full delivery of the 9.34 MW Gbedin Falls run-of-river hydropower plant. The new financing will cover construction overruns, grid-integration work, project-management delays, and outstanding activities under the Gender Action Plan. The initiative, jointly implemented with the Government of Liberia, aims to stabilise electricity supply and expand reliable renewable power to underserved communities.

 Statistics & Insights:

  •  Additional Funding: $7.41 million (from the AfDF).

  • Energy Output: The plant is designed to generate an estimated 56.5 GWh annually.

  • Grid Contribution: Expected to contribute about 6.9% of Liberia’s total electricity supply upon completion.

  • Infrastructure: Includes an 8km, 33kV evacuation line, two transformer substations, and installation of 50km of distribution lines.

Future Implications:Once commissioned, the project could strengthen grid reliability, cut dependence on diesel generation, and support Liberia’s long-term plan to scale low-carbon power infrastructure. It may also accelerate regional energy-trade readiness through the cross-border transmission link .
