Africa’s Electric Motorcycle Sector Expands

Key Figures & Findings: Spiro, Africa’s leading battery swapping network for electric motorcycles, has launched operations in Tanzania and Cameroon, extending its footprint to eight African countries. The company, which operates over 600 swapping stations and 30,000 electric motorbikes, aims to localize manufacturing, reduce reliance on imports, and expand access to affordable electric mobility. In Tanzania, Spiro plans to establish local assembly facilities to create jobs and lower vehicle costs, while in Cameroon, the company seeks to support the country’s clean transport agenda. CEO Kaushik Burman highlighted Spiro’s mission to offer the continent’s most affordable, eco-friendly transportation network.

Insights: Spiro has surpassed 20 million battery swaps and achieved over 500 million kilometers of carbon-free travel across Africa. In Tanzania alone, more than 10 battery swapping stations have already been deployed to support rapid urban e-mobility expansion.

Future Implications: If regional scale-up efforts continue as anticipated, Africa’s electric two-wheeler ecosystem could see wider adoption by 2026, reducing urban emissions and creating new economic opportunities linked to clean transport. Strategic government partnerships could further accelerate progress across the continent.
