Africa’s Largest Solar Site Adds Storage

Key Figures & Findings:
AMEA Power, a Dubai-based renewable energy developer, has partnered with Trinasolar and Energy China ZTPC to install a 300MWh battery energy storage system (BESS) at the 500MW Abydos Solar Power Plant in Aswan, Egypt. Trinasolar’s Elementa 2 storage solution, featuring lithium iron phosphate cells, marks the company's first Middle East and Africa storage project. The plant, inaugurated by Egypt’s Prime Minister, Dr. Mostafa Madbouly, and Minister of Electricity, Dr. Mahmoud Esmat, solidifies Egypt’s renewable energy ambitions under a power purchase agreement (PPA) with the Egyptian Electricity Transmission Company.

Statistics & Insights:
This development aligns with Egypt’s broader renewable goals, including AMEA Power’s upcoming 1GW Benban solar project, incorporating a 600MWh BESS.

Future Implications:
The integration of BESS at Abydos is expected to enhance grid stability and energy reliability, paving the way for more advanced renewable projects in the region. The collaboration highlights the growing role of global partnerships in meeting Egypt’s energy transition goals.
