Africa's Largest Solar-Storage Partnership
Key Figures & Findings: JA Solar a prominent Chinese solar energy company that specializes in the design, development, manufacture, and sale of solar cells and modules has signed a 1.25GW module procurement agreement with China Energy Engineering Corporation (CEEC) for the Abydos Phase II PV-Storage Project, the largest of its kind in Africa. The project, developed by AMEA Power and constructed by CEEC, is set to feature a massive photovoltaic (PV) installation and the continent’s largest battery storage system. Spanning 20 square kilometers, the project will boost renewable energy capacity in Egypt and support its Vision 2030 goals. Key stakeholders, including AMEA Power Chairman Hussain Al Nowais and Egyptian Prime Minister Mostafa Madbouly, emphasized the project’s role in advancing sustainable energy.
Statistics & Insights: The Abydos project is expected to produce 3,000 GWh annually, supplying power to over 500,000 households and reducing CO₂ emissions by over 1 million tons per year. JA Solar's involvement follows the successful completion of the 500MW Abydos Solar PV Plant, where it also supplied all PV modules.
Future Implications: By 2025, the project could significantly enhance grid stability in Egypt and contribute to Africa’s transition to cleaner energy sources. The partnership highlights the potential for Chinese firms to expand investments across Africa’s energy sector.
