African Scientists Push Next-Gen Solar Innovation

Key Figures & Findings: Researchers from the University of KwaZulu-Natal (UKZN) have partnered on a $3.7 million (£1.5 million) project led by Swansea University to pioneer perovskite solar module (PSM) manufacturing in Africa. Funded by the UKRI Ayrton Challenge Programme, the REACH-PSM initiative aims to establish the first large-scale African demonstration of next-generation solar manufacturing, promoting energy access and economic growth. Collaborations include universities, businesses, and local communities in Nigeria, Rwanda, Kenya, and South Africa, with UKZN Professors Vincent Nyamori, Bice Martincigh, and Thea van der Westhuizen playing significant roles.
Statistics & Insights: More than 500 million Africans lack access to electricity, making affordable solar solutions crucial. Perovskite technology—integrated with sustainable carbon nanomaterials—promises lower manufacturing costs and higher efficiency, reducing dependence on imported solar technologies.
Future Implications: If successful, this project could help accelerate Africa’s transition to clean energy, reduce dependency on imported solar technology, and create new economic opportunities in renewable energy manufacturing.
