AIC, Gambia Advances 5MW Solar Deal

Key Figures & Findings: Turkish renewable energy firm AIC is intensifying its presence with the launch of a 5 MW solar power project in Tanji, Gambia, marking a key step in the country’s energy diversification strategy. AIC’s CEO, Dennis Elverir, underscored that the firm’s mission extends beyond electricity generation to community empowerment through training and local procurement. The Gambia’s national utility, NAWEC, will serve as the off-taker under grid-connected frameworks aimed at reducing fossil fuel reliance.

Statistics & Insights: In addition to the Tanji facility, AIC is financing a 540 kW project, has commissioned an 80 kW installation in Mandinary, and is developing three more sites totaling over 5.4 MW, with a 700 kW grid-connection already underway.

Future Implications: If completed as planned, AIC’s projects could contribute over 11 MW of solar capacity to The Gambia’s grid by 2026, supporting NAWEC’s reliability targets and slashing diesel imports. The firm’s community-led approach could also create local jobs and bolster skills development across project sites.
