Amazon Invests in South African Nuclear

Key Figures & Findings: US-based nuclear energy firm X-energy has gained significant support from Amazon in a pivotal investment aiming to develop small modular reactors (SMRs) in South Africa. This partnership includes an upfront $300 million investment, André Pienaar, CEO of C5 Capital, an X-energy investor emphasized that Amazon’s involvement not only brings substantial capital but also crucial expertise in efficient data center infrastructure. This partnership envisions SMRs powering Amazon’s expansive data centers globally and supporting South Africa’s clean energy needs, leveraging the country’s strong nuclear foundation and skilled workforce. 

Statistics & Insights: Amazon’s involvement with X-energy will support the development of 4,500MW through approximately 14 SMRs to supply power to its data centers. X-energy is concurrently building a four-unit Xe-100 SMR facility in the US, supported by the US Department of Energy.
