Angola-DRC $1.5B Power Link Deal

Key Figures & Findings: HYDRO-LINK, a U.S. special-purpose energy vehicle, and Switzerland’s Mitrelli Group have signed a $1.5 billion agreement to develop a 1,150-kilometre electricity transmission line between Angola and the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC). The deal was formalized during the U.S.-Africa Business Summit held in Luanda. The planned line is expected to channel energy from Angola’s Kwanza River into southeastern DRC, easing disruptions that routinely affect mineral output. HYDRO-LINK is also expected to formalize the deal with the Angolan government imminently.

Statistics & Insights:  Completion expected by 2029 with over 3,500 transmission towers and fiber‑optic capability embedded in the design . Roughly 1,200 MW of hydropower capacity will be transmitted, benefiting state utilities, mining operators, and communities along the route

Future Implications: If completed on schedule, this cross-border grid could redefine regional energy flows, support cross-border grid integration, strengthen bilateral energy trade, and expand U.S. private sector involvement in African infrastructure development.
