Angola Opens Landmark Solar Park

Key Figures & Findings: The Angolan government officially inaugurated the largest off-grid photovoltaic solar park in sub-Saharan Africa, located in Moxico Leste. The new facility provides continuous power for the first time to more than 130,000 people in the isolated region. The project was developed and constructed by the Portuguese company MCA.

Statistics & Insights:

  •  Project Components: The facility features a 25-megawatt (MW) solar plant supported by 75 MW of battery storage and over 40,000 solar panels.

  • Advanced Tech: The system includes a large Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) and Blackstart capability for automatic system restarts after an outage.

  • Fuel/Emissions Savings: The plant is projected to save nearly 10 million litres of fuel and reduce approximately 37,000 tonnes of carbon dioxide emissions annually.

  • National Program Investment: The project is part of a broader national electrification plan to supply 60 remote locations for nearly 1 million citizens, with a total investment exceeding US$1 billion (~€862 million).

Future Implications: If fully executed, the programme could ease energy poverty in remote provinces, reduce Angola’s dependence on fuel logistics, and accelerate rural economic growth—supporting agriculture, small industry, and long-term private-sector investment across the east.
