Angola’s 80MWp Solar Surge

Key Figures & Findings: Quilamba Solar Lda, a joint venture between TotalEnergies (51%), Sonangol (30%), and Maurel & Prom (19%), has commenced construction of the Quilamba photovoltaic power plant near Lubango, Angola. This project, designed to strengthen Angola’s energy security and diversify its energy mix, leverages TotalEnergies’ global expertise in renewable projects and Sonangol’s established presence in the Angolan energy market. Notably, Maurel & Prom, recognized for its oil and gas operations, is expanding into the renewable sector, aligning with global decarbonization targets. The groundbreaking ceremony was held on May 16, 2025, in the presence of key national and international stakeholders, signaling robust support for Angola’s clean energy ambitions.
Statistics & Insights: The first phase will deliver 35 MWp, with plans to scale to 80 MWp in a second phase. By 2026, the plant is projected to supply renewable electricity to nearly 40,000 Angolan homes, significantly contributing to the country’s carbon reduction goals.
Future Implications: By June 2026, the project could become Angola’s largest privately owned photovoltaic facility, reducing reliance on fossil fuels and creating a cleaner energy future. This collaboration may also catalyze further renewable investments in Angola’s energy landscape.
