Anzana, RHPCL Partner on Rusizi III

Key Figures & Findings: Anzana Electric Group, a U.S.-based power developer in Africa’s Great Lakes region, has signed a Letter of Intent with Rusizi III Holding Power Company Limited (RHPCL) to acquire at least a 10% equity stake in the 206 MW Ruzizi III hydropower project. The agreement, signed at the U.S.–Africa Business Summit in Angola, outlines plans to finalize a binding partnership by September 15, 2025. The tri‑national project is a public–private partnership involving Burundi, Rwanda, and the DRC under RHPCL’s umbrella. Anzana’s CEO Brian Kelly and RHPCL director Aleem Karmali emphasized the strategic aim of enhancing regional energy security and enabling U.S. investment in African infrastructure.
Statistics & Insights: The 206 MW facility, costing approximately $760 million, will power over 30 million people across the three countries. It is expected to nearly double Burundi’s capacity, increase Rwanda’s by 30%, and provide baseload power to eastern DRC.
Future Implications: If the partnership is finalized by September 2025, Anzana’s involvement could strengthen governance, attract further U.S. and international capital, and accelerate the project toward commercial operations by 2029. The deal may set a precedent for private-sector equity participation in regional infrastructure ventures.
