Atlantis Foundries Unveils 13.5 MW Solar Project

Key Figures & Findings: Atlantis Foundries, a leading automotive and marine engine block casting company, has launched a 13.5 MW embedded solar generation project in Cape Town’s Atlantis Special Economic Zone. The initiative, developed in partnership with Energy Partners, aims to enhance energy security, cut costs, and reduce carbon emissions. CEO Pieter du Plessis emphasized the project's role in keeping the company globally competitive while lowering reliance on Eskom’s grid.

Statistics & Insights: The system will generate over 20,000 MWh annually, meeting 20% of the foundry’s energy needs and saving over 21,000 tons of CO₂ per year. At current Eskom tariffs, it is expected to offset electricity costs worth over $1.8 million annually.

Future Implications: If successful, this project could serve as a model for other energy-intensive manufacturers in South Africa seeking to reduce costs and align with international sustainability regulations. The foundry’s shift toward renewable energy may also help mitigate the impact of stricter carbon border tariffs in key export markets.
