AXIAN Energy Launches NEA Kolda Project

Key Figures & Findings: AXIAN Energy has officially broken ground on the NEA Kolda solar power plant in southern Senegal’s Kolda region, marking a major step in the country’s energy transition. With a planned capacity of 60 MW, complemented by a 72 MWh battery energy storage system (BESS), the project is positioned to significantly strengthen Senegal’s grid resilience and provide clean energy to over 235,000 people. Benjamin Memmi, CEO of AXIAN Energy, hailed the project as “a new generation of energy infrastructure in West Africa, combining inclusion, innovation, and territorial impact.” The plant’s development is backed by €84 million from EAAIF, FMO, and DEG, with a total investment of nearly €105 million. Voltalia and Entech will deliver the plant’s construction.
Statistics & Insights: The NEA Kolda solar power plant will cover around 700 km from Dakar and will support Senegal’s goal to source 40% of its energy from renewables by 2030. AXIAN Energy has allocated nearly 2 billion FCFA toward community-driven initiatives, focusing on economic development, health, education, and climate change resilience.
Future Implications: The NEA Kolda project is expected to serve as a model for sustainable energy and community inclusion in West Africa, with nearly 400 local workers contributing to both construction and ongoing operations. If current policies and projects remain on track, Senegal’s clean energy share could reach 40% by 2030.
