Key Figures & Findings: Pan-African developer Axian Energy, headquartered in Madagascar, has partnered with Sika Capital a Beninese investment firm focused on infrastructure and energy ventures, to deliver Benin’s first renewable-focused independent power producer (IPP) project. The agreement, announced with support from national authorities and local Stakeholders the aims to improve energy access nationwide. Axian Energy CEO Benjamin Memmi described the collaboration as an important milestone, while Sika Capital Chairman Tchegnon Amoussou emphasized its significance for Benin’s clean energy ambitions.
Statistics & Insights: The project is valued at $42.7 million, and the installation of 50 MWac across four plants in Bohicon, Parakou, Djougou, and Natitingou. With $41 million already secured from development finance institutions, the facilities are expected to supply electricity to 50,000 households and support Benin’s target of sourcing 30% of its power from renewables.
Future Implications: If operational by 2027, the plants could bolster Benin’s grid reliability and stimulate further private-sector infrastructure investment. They may also serve as a regional model for scaling IPP-led renewable initiatives in the region.
