Benin Expands Solar Energy Capacity

Key Figures & Findings: Benin has commenced construction of the 25 MW Forsun photovoltaic (PV) plant, enhancing the capacity of the Illoulofin solar power plant. The project, valued at $25.8 million, is funded by the French Development Agency (AFD) and the European Union. The Illoulofin site previously hosted Defisol, completed in 2022, and the recent TTC project by Toyota Tsusho, nearing operational status. The Forsun plant underscores Benin’s commitment to sustainable energy, complementing its national energy strategy to reduce reliance on imports and prioritize green development.
Statistics & Insights: Upon completion, the Forsun plant will expand Illoulofin’s capacity from 50 MW to 75 MW, providing electricity to thousands of households. Benin’s current electricity access rate is approximately 41%, heavily dependent on imported natural gas and petroleum.
Future Implications: Once operational in 2024, the Forsun project could substantially boost Benin's electricity supply, reducing its dependency on energy imports and enhancing rural and urban energy access. The project also lays a foundation for further renewable energy initiatives, aligning with Benin’s sustainable development goals and regional energy ambitions.
