Benin Launches $20M Clean Energy Drive

Key Figures & Findings: Benin has awarded $19.95 million in solar contracts to India’s Premier Energies, as part of its national initiative to expand access to reliable clean energy. The projects will be implemented with the General Directorate of Energy Planning and Rural Electrification under the Ministry of Energy, Water, and Mines. The scope includes 750 rooftop solar systems at schools, police stations, health centres, and border units, alongside 4,400 solar streetlights and 650 solar water heaters. Financing comes through a Line of Credit from the Export-Import Bank of India (EXIM Bank) and the ECOWAS Bank for Investment and Development (EBID).

Statistics & Insights: The package is projected to improve services for thousands of households, while reducing reliance on diesel in public facilities. Premier Energies, already among India’s largest vertically integrated solar cell and module makers, is expanding to 8.4 GW cell and 11.1 GW module capacity by June 2026, signalling ambitions beyond Africa.

Future Implications: If delivered as planned, Benin’s contracts could provide a model for scaling solar-backed community infrastructure across West Africa by 2026–2030, while strengthening India–Africa renewable energy ties.

Quick Take: Benin is rolling out $20M in rooftop solar, streetlights, and water heaters — bringing clean energy into schools, clinics, and police posts.
