Burkina Faso, Gutami Secure 150MW Solar

Key Figures & Findings: Gutami Holding BV, a global renewable energy developer headquartered in the Netherlands, has partnered with the Government of Burkina Faso and the national utility SONABEL to launch a major solar energy project under a Public-Private Partnership (PPP) framework. Supported by law firm Mayer Brown, the deal includes a 150MWp solar photovoltaic system integrated with a 50MW battery energy storage system (BESS), with all regulatory milestones—permits, licenses, and land rights—already secured. Gutami, established in 2006, has a track record of financing, acquiring, and optimizing clean energy assets worldwide, with a focus on solar, hydrogen, and storage systems. The project, slated for commercial operations by Q4 2027, marks a central investment in Burkina Faso’s long-term energy diversification plan.

Statistics & Insights: The 200MW combined capacity will feed into Burkina Faso’s national grid for 25 years. Once operational, it is expected to be the largest grid-tied solar PV plant in West Africa.

Future Implications: If completed on schedule, the project could reduce Burkina Faso’s reliance on imported energy by 2028 and set a regional benchmark for utility-scale solar-plus-storage developments. It may also open new PPP investment channels across francophone West Africa.
