Côte d’Ivoire Expands Solar Energy Capacity

Key Figures & Findings: Construction has begun on the FERKE SOLAR photovoltaic plant in Ferkéssédougou, Côte d’Ivoire. This $65 million project is spearheaded by PFO Energies, a subsidiary of PFO Afric focused on large-scale construction and renewable energy projects. The facility, covering 70 hectares, will feature 70,000 next-generation photovoltaic panels, generating 90 GWh annually, enough to power 370,000 households. This initiative aligns with the country’s goal of 45% renewable energy by 2030, reducing its dependence on fossil fuels.
Statistics & Insights: The $56 million project, funded by the Emerging Africa Infrastructure Fund (EAIF) and the West African Development Bank (BOAD), underscores the increasing role of international financing in West Africa’s renewable energy sector. Similar initiatives, like the $57 million 50 MW Katiola solar project, further highlight Côte d’Ivoire’s significant push toward clean energy.
Future Implications: Upon completion in late 2025, the project could enhance energy security, stabilize the grid, and support regional economic growth.
