Cameroon Secures $9.8M for Solar Expansion

Key Figures & Findings: Cameroon has secured a financial guarantee of approximately CFA 6 billion ($9.8 million) to support the expansion of its solar power plants in Maroua and Guider. This guarantee, benefiting Eneo the primary electricity provider in Cameroon, involved in the generation, transmission, and distribution of electrical energy across the country, received preliminary approval from the Ministry of Finance shared this update during his 2025 budget presentation to the Finance and Budget Committee of the National Assembly. The project is being executed in partnership with Release, a subsidiary of Norway's Scatec, which signed a lease-transfer agreement in June 2024 to oversee the expansion efforts. The initiative will feature 1,040 solar trackers and 52,000 bifacial monocrystalline silicon panels with an average capacity of 550 Wc, complemented by advanced lithium, iron, and phosphate battery storage for reliable nighttime electricity.
Statistics & Insights: Notably, the first phases of the plants have already generated 104.16 gigawatt-hours of electricity for the Northern Interconnected Grid, resulting in savings of over CFA 41 billion ( $67 million) compared to diesel-powered thermal generation.
Future Implications:
Once fully implemented, the expanded facilities could significantly enhance Northern Cameroon's energy capacity and reliability, reducing dependence on costly thermal plants and supporting the country's transition to renewable energy.
