Cape Town Launches 120 EV Bus Project

Key Figures & Findings: Cape Town has unveiled South Africa’s largest public EV bus charging hub, designed to power a fleet of 120 electric buses by December 2025. The facility, located at the Arrowgate Depot and developed with Autel Energy and STS Tech Group, integrates a solar–grid hybrid system to ensure sustainable operations. Currently, 68 electric buses are already in service, each with a capacity for 65 passengers and a range of up to 240 km.
Statistics & Insights: The depot currently operates 30 fast chargers, with plans to increase this to 50 units by year-end. The transition is expected to cut 18,000 tonnes of CO₂ annually, equivalent to removing more than 4,000 cars from the road.
Future Implications: The initiative positions Cape Town as a pioneer of electric public transport in Africa and could provide a replicable model for other urban centres. By linking EV fleets to renewable-ready charging systems, the project may accelerate South Africa’s transport decarbonisation strategy and bolster climate targets beyond 2025.
