CEI Africa Invests €1.1M in MPower

Key Figures & Findings: The Foundation for Clean Energy and Energy Inclusion for Africa (CEI Africa) has invested €1.1 million in MPower Ventures AG, a climate fintech company focused on solar energy solutions for underserved African markets. The funding includes both equity and a subordinated loan, marking CEI Africa’s first collaboration with crowdfunding platforms Klimja and Republic. MPower, which operates in Zambia, Cameroon, Togo, Ghana, Namibia, Botswana, and Zimbabwe, aims to expand its distributor network, diversify its product portfolio, and enhance its financing solutions for small and medium-scale solar infrastructure.

Statistics & Insights: MPower has sold over 50,000 solar products across seven African countries. The company secured €795,000 from Klimja and €1.7 million from Republic, including angel investments. CEI Africa, founded by KfW and later joined by the Swiss Development Cooperation, supports rural energy access in sub-Saharan Africa through strategic financing.

Future Implications: With this funding, MPower could accelerate solar adoption in West and Southern Africa, addressing unreliable grid infrastructure and benefiting households, SMEs, and agribusinesses. If successful, this model may attract further private investments into Africa’s decentralized renewable energy sector.
