Chad launches Hybrid Solar Plant

Key Figures & Findings: Chad has officially commissioned a 36 MW solar photovoltaic plant coupled with a 20 MWh battery energy storage system in Klessoum, on the outskirts of N’Djamena. Developed by Release by Scatec, a subsidiary of Norway’s Scatec ASA specializing in modular clean energy projects, the facility combines pre-assembled solar and battery units to speed up deployment. The project, delivered under a leasing model, marks Chad’s first large-scale hybrid energy project and received local support from Société Nationale d’Électricité du Tchad (SNE) and financial backing from the International Finance Corporation (IFC). Arnaud Gouet, Senior Vice President of Utilities at Release by Scatec, stated the project demonstrates the role modular solutions can play in underserved markets.
Statistics & Insights: The project benefits from a $65 million liquidity guarantee by the World Bank’s International Development Association (IDA), aimed at reducing investment risks. Only 11% of N’Djamena’s population is currently connected to the national grid, highlighting the urgency of the new infrastructure.
Future Implications: If maintained successfully, the Klessoum plant could improve energy reliability in the capital and serve as a model for hybrid renewable deployment across Sub-Saharan Africa by 2026. Its financing approach could also encourage more private-sector investment in fragile markets.
