Chad Secures $1.1bn for Electricity Power

Key Figures & Findings: Chad’s Ministry of Finance, Budget, Economy, and Planning has mobilized $1.1 billion under the national “Chad Connexion 2030” plan to expand electricity access. The program targets 866 MW of new capacity by 2030, including 520 MW from solar, with the goal of raising national electricity access from just 6% to 60%. Authorities say the initiative is designed not only to boost generation but also to modernize grids and attract private investment to accelerate access across both urban and rural areas.
Statistics & Insights: Currently, only 6% of Chad’s population has electricity, and in rural areas, just 1–2% are connected. A separate $295 million accelerated electrification program backed by the World Bank aims to push coverage to 30% by 2027.
Future Implications: If successfully implemented, Chad’s Connexion 2030 plan could reshape the country’s power sector by diversifying away from fossil fuels and scaling solar energy. By 2030, it could also transform rural access, supporting households and businesses while improving investor confidence in one of Africa’s least electrified nations.
