City Power Unveils EV Fleet Plan

Key Figures & Findings: Johannesburg’s utility provider, City Power, is set to roll out a citywide network of electric vehicle (EV) charging stations, forming part of its Electric Vehicle Programme and broader 10‑Point Energy Plan. CEO Tshifularo Mashava said the initiative reflects the city’s intent to lead in clean mobility while addressing energy resilience, local emissions, and economic opportunities. The new EV fleet will include both light- and heavy-duty vehicles, while the public will benefit from expanded access and quicker charging via battery-swapping technology.

Insights: Charging stations will be installed at City Power depots, Rea Vaya and Metrobus stations, and across public roads and townships. Battery-swapping stations will be introduced to reduce waiting times, and the EV fleet is expected to lower fuel and maintenance costs long term.

Future Implications: If successfully implemented, this EV infrastructure could improve urban mobility and reduce the city’s dependence on fossil fuels. Also, the e-Fleet Innovation Lab and new academic partnerships would be expected to accelerate EV-related skills development and research from 2025 onward.
