Clean Energy Scales Across West Pokot

Key Figures & Findings: Kenya’s Off-Grid Solar Access Project (KOSAP) has entered an advanced implementation phase in West Pokot County, with Hypertek Engineering assuming the technical execution role. Backed by a national investment of KSh10 billion (~USD 76 million), the project is led by Kenya’s Ministry of Energy and supported by the World Bank to address energy inequality in marginalized regions. Governor Simon Kachapin hosted Kenya Power and KOSAP officials to mark the formal project handover. Hypertek is tasked with deploying decentralized solar systems to remote communities previously disconnected from the national grid. The initiative aligns with broader efforts under President William Ruto’s energy access commitments launched earlier this year.
Insights: The programme has delivered solar electrification to 31 health centres, equipped over 16,500 households with home solar systems, and enabled 5,000 families to switch to clean cookstoves. Planned expansion includes solarising 33 boreholes across Pokot Central, Kipkomo, and North Pokot.
Future Implications: If sustained, this initiative could dramatically reduce indoor air pollution and boost access to clean water and energy services in remote areas by 2026. Capacity-building efforts also suggest long-term scalability and improved local technical ownership.
