Coega Hydrogen Project Secures 1,430MW

Key Figures & Findings: South Africa’s Coega Green Ammonia project, spearheaded by Hive Hydrogen South Africa, has reached a major development milestone with the full permitting of a 1,430 MW solar PV cluster. This solar phase will supply 40% of the clean power needed to operate the R105 billion(approximately $5.5 billion) green hydrogen and ammonia plant in the Coega Special Economic Zone, Gqeberha. The solar development, led by Crossroads Green Energy with partners including Africoast Investments, Akuo Energy, and Golden Sunshine Trading, marks the largest permitted PV project in the southern hemisphere.
Statistics & Insights: The solar cluster, valued at R15 billion (approximately $780 million), adds to the project’s 1,880 MW wind capacity and is expected to support annual production of over one million tonnes of green ammonia. The plant’s grid upgrade program could unlock up to 20,000 MW of additional IPP connectivity across South Africa.
Future Implications: Commercial operations are projected to begin in Q4 2029, with the potential to accelerate South Africa’s green hydrogen export ambitions. The project could also draw over $3 billion in green infrastructure investment and create long-term jobs across multiple provinces.
