Darling 6MW Solar Project Launched

Key Figures & Findings: Sustainable Power Solutions (SPS), in collaboration with TouchPoint Energy and Darling Green Country Estate, has launched a 6MW solar initiative in Darling, South Africa. This project, structured in two phases, will supply clean energy to the upmarket Darling Green residential estate and the national grid. Phase 1 will see the construction of a 1MW solar plant, with surplus energy sold to Swartland Municipality. Phase 2 involves a 5MW solar plant that connects to Eskom’s grid. The project’s development model includes managing distribution and Darling Green Utility. TouchPoint Energy will lead the conceptualization and advisory support, while SPS will oversee implementation. All permits and Power Purchase Agreements (PPAs) have been finalised. Eskom has approved the grid connection.
Statistics & Insights: The 1MW plant, operational since March 10, 2025, supplies clean energy to 163 residential stands within the estate, all of which have been sold. The 5MW plant, scheduled for completion by mid-2025, will generate approximately 9,125 MWh annually, enough to power over 3,000 households. The project includes battery storage solutions to mitigate load-shedding impacts, ensuring a reliable power supply for residents.
Future Implications: If successfully executed, this project could serve as a replicable model for integrating renewable energy into residential estates across South Africa. It may also encourage similar projects nationwide, potentially easing pressure on Eskom by 2026 and contributing to the country’s renewable energy targets.
