Denmark-South Africa Wind Mapping Collaboration
In a joint initiative, the Danish Energy Agency (DEA) and South Africa’s Department of Mineral Resources and Energy are investing in the fourth phase of the Wind Atlas of South Africa (WASA4) to assess wind potential in Mpumalanga. This project aims to create reliable data for Mpumalanga, a province traditionally focused on coal. The collaboration, spearheaded by DEA Deputy Director-General Stine Leth Rasmussen, includes key researchers from the Danish Technical University, South African National Energy Development Institute, and other partners. Notably, this mapping project aligns with South Africa's Just Energy Transition Partnership, launched in 2021, where Denmark committed $165 million of a larger $11.7 billion global fund.
Statistics & Insights:
The International Partnership Group (IPG) has pledged $11.7 billion to support South Africa’s Just Energy Transition Partnership, with Denmark contributing $165 million. Mpumalanga's detailed wind resource mapping, part of WASA4, is intended to attract investment in wind projects by reducing project risk.
Future Implications:
By 2025, the mapping data will guide developers in making informed investments and advancing South Africa’s renewable goals.
