DFC’s $3.1M Boost for Burundi’s Grid Expansion
Key Figures & Findings:
The U.S. International Development Finance Corporation (DFC) has announced a $3.1 million technical assistance grant to support Weza Power, the first new private-sector electricity distribution company operating at a national level in sub-Saharan Africa and Anzana Electric Group's subsidiary, in expanding Burundi's grid access. This initiative is part of an innovative public-private partnership between Weza Power and the Government of Burundi. The project aims to help connect over 40,000 new homes and businesses starting in 2025, to provide electricity to 9 million Burundians. The effort is supported by the U.S. Trade and Development Agency and USAID, aligning with DFC’s commitment to fostering energy security and economic growth in Africa.
Statistics & Insights:
Currently, only 12% of Burundi’s population has access to electricity, with rural access dropping to less than 2%. The Weza Power project aims to increase this figure to over 70% by 2030, transforming the country’s energy landscape.
Future Implications:
With DFC’s support and planned grid expansion, Burundi’s electrification efforts could substantially improve the quality of life, economic growth, and job creation, setting the stage for a more sustainable energy future.
