EDF Opens South Africa Substation

Key Figures & Findings: EDF Renewables,a subsidiary of the global EDF Group currently involved in multiple clean energy projects across Africa, alongside partners H1 Holdings, Gibb-Crede, and a local community trust, has delivered South Africa’s first fully self-built greenfield transmission substation in over seven years. Located near Noupoort in the Northern Cape, the Korosun 400/132 kV MTS will allow the connection of 1.5 GW of renewable energy to the national grid. The Koruson development is a critical part of South Africa’s renewable integration strategy and marks a significant engineering achievement, being fully financed, constructed, and commissioned by an independent power producer.
Statistics & Insights: The adjacent Koruson 1 cluster, made up of three wind farms, will contribute 420 MW, while the planned Koruson 2 cluster—developed by Envusa Energy—will add another 520 MW, totaling 940 MW of clean energy from the area.
Future Implications: If completed as planned, the Koruson clusters could significantly ease grid congestion by 2025 and support South Africa’s move toward reliable renewable energy integration, particularly from wind and solar sources in the Northern Cape.
