Egypt, AMEA Power Launch 500MW Wind

Key Figures & Findings: AMEA Power, a Dubai-based renewable energy developer, has commissioned a 500MW wind farm in Ras Ghareb, Egypt—now the largest operational wind facility in Africa. The Amunet Wind Power Plant is a joint venture between AMEA Power (60%) and Japan’s Sumitomo Corporation (40%). Completed 2.5 months ahead of schedule, the project reflects growing investor confidence in Egypt’s renewable energy sector and consolidates its utility-scale clean power deployment. Hussain Al Nowais, Chairman of AMEA Power, emphasized the company’s ability to execute large-scale projects efficiently while contributing to energy access and reducing emissions.
Statistics & Insights: The wind farm is projected to generate 2,500 gigawatt-hours (GWh) of electricity per year, supplying over 500,000 households and offsetting approximately 1.4 million tons of CO₂ annually. It also created over 800 jobs during construction and added 1GW to Egypt’s clean energy capacity in just six months.
Future Implications: If Egypt continues to support such rapid development, its wind and solar portfolio could exceed current targets before 2030. AMEA Power’s expanding footprint, including multiple battery storage and PV projects, could also influence regional energy policies across North and East Africa.
