Egypt, AMEA Power Unveil Solar Plant

Key Figures & Findings:
Egypt has officially launched the $500 million Abydos Solar PV Plant in Aswan, a landmark initiative to boost renewable energy generation following last summer’s widespread power outages. Developed by AMEA Power, a Dubai-based renewable energy firm, the 500 MW facility marks a key milestone in Egypt’s clean energy ambitions. Prime Minister Moustafa Madbouly emphasized the plant’s role in reducing dependency on traditional energy sources while strengthening grid reliability.

Statistics & Insights:
The plant will generate 1,500 GWh of electricity annually, cutting CO₂ emissions by 782,300 tonnes. The project, which will supply power to 300,000 homes, received funding from the International Finance Corporation, Dutch Entrepreneurial Development Bank, and Japan International Cooperation Agency.

Future Implications:
The success of the Abydos Solar Plant positions Egypt closer to its target of achieving 42% renewable energy by 2030, up from 11.5% in 2023. The initiative also highlights Aswan’s strategic advantage with its consistently high solar radiation, reinforcing the city’s status as a renewable energy hub.
