Egypt, Djibouti Sign Solar Deal

Key Figures & Findings: Egypt has signed a contract to build a 3 MW off-grid solar plant with 1,129 kWh of battery storage in Djibouti, reinforcing its regional push for clean energy diplomacy. The agreement was concluded in Cairo between Egypt’s Arab Renewable Energy Authority, under the Arab Organization for Industrialization, and the New and Renewable Energy Authority, which will act as technical consultant. The project marks Egypt’s first renewable energy venture in Djibouti and is part of a wider strategy to extend its energy footprint across the Horn of Africa, leveraging infrastructure exports to strengthen political ties. Egyptian officials have confirmed site works will begin immediately.

Statistics & Insights: The station will deploy off-grid PV systems and over 1 MWh of storage to stabilise supply in remote areas. Djibouti remains heavily reliant on energy imports, while Egypt aims to double its share of renewables in regional partnerships by 2030.

Future Implications: If completed by late 2026, the project could improve energy access in Djibouti and deepen Egypt’s influence as a technical energy partner in East Africa. It may also catalyse further PV collaborations between Egypt and neighbouring states.
