Egypt’s El Dabaa Nuclear Milestone

Key Figures & Findings: Egypt's El Dabaa Nuclear Power Plant (NPP) is on track to install its first reactor shell at Unit One by late 2025, according to Alexey Kononenko, vice president of JSC Atomstroyexport (a subsidiary of Rosatom). The $30 billion project, located 300 km northwest of Cairo, will have four VVER-1200 reactors, making it Egypt’s first nuclear power facility. Rosatom is responsible for construction, fuel supply for 60 years, and maintenance for 10 years after commissioning.

Statistics & Insights: El Dabaa will generate 4.8 GW once fully operational, covering up to 10% of Egypt’s electricity needs with thousands of local engineers trained for plant operations. Construction is progressing on schedule, with no reported delays. Egypt expects full operational capacity by 2030, providing a long-term energy solution for the country.

Future Implications: If successful, El Dabaa could reduce Egypt’s reliance on fossil fuels by 20%, aligning with its 42% renewable energy target. Also, the project may pave the way for further nuclear investments in Africa, enhancing energy security across the region.
