Egypt, Sunrev Begins Solar Manufacturing

Key Figures & Findings: The Suez Canal Economic Zone (SCZONE) has signed a $200 million agreement with Chinese solar giant Sunrev Solar to establish an integrated industrial complex for solar energy manufacturing in Ain Sokhna, Egypt. Announced by SCZONE Chairman Waleid Gamal El-Dien, the project aims to deepen Egypt’s localization of clean energy technologies, from module assembly to upstream raw material processing. The project is in two phases. The first phase of the complex will deliver two integrated factories for solar cell and module production (2 GW capacity each), while the second phase will localize upstream materials such as silicon ingots and wafers.
Statistics & Insights: The two-phase project involves a $90 million investment in manufacturing lines and $110 million toward upstream material production. Also, the strategic Sokhna location was chosen for its port proximity, investment incentives, and grid infrastructure.
Future Implications: If completed on schedule by 2026, this plant could significantly cut Egypt’s solar equipment import dependency and position the Ain Sokhna corridor as a regional anchor for renewable manufacturing. The long-term impact could shape export pipelines into Europe, the Gulf, and sub-Saharan Africa.
