Egypt, UAE, and JA Solar Collaborate

Key Figures & Findings: Egypt has formalized a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with UAE-based Global South Utilities (GSO) and JA Solar a leading global manufacturer that specializes in the design, development, and production of solar cells and modules, to establish two solar plants: one for manufacturing solar cells and the other for solar modules. JA Solar will bring its expertise to the project, which includes a 2GW solar cell plant and a 2GW solar module plant. The partnership aims to enhance solar production in Egypt, focusing on serving local markets.

Statistics & Insights: The two solar production plants will involve investments of $138 million for the solar cell facility and $75 million for the solar module plant. The Egyptian Future Sustainable Development Authority (EFSDA) floating solar project at Lake Nasser will have a total capacity of 5GW and be implemented in two phases.

Future Implications: If the Lake Nasser floating solar project is completed as planned by 2028, it could set a benchmark for similar large-scale initiatives across Africa.
