Eramet and JUWI Launch Senegal Solar Project

Key Figures & Findings: Eramet Grande Côte, a Senegalese subsidiary of the France-based mining and the world’s fourth-largest producer of mineral sands, including ilmenite and zircon, has partnered with South Africa’s JUWI Renewable Energies a prominent player in the renewable energy sector, specializing in the development and management of solar and wind energy projects. to develop a €30 million ($31.5 million) off-grid solar photovoltaic (PV) and battery storage project at the Diogo mineral sands mine in Senegal. The facility, with a capacity of 20 MWp solar and 11 MWh battery storage, is set to meet 20% of the mine’s energy requirements. This initiative reflects Eramet’s commitment to its global decarbonization strategy.

Statistics & Insights: The project supports Senegal’s national goal of cutting greenhouse gas emissions by 7% by 2025 while aligning with Eramet’s ambition to achieve a 40% CO2 reduction by 2035 and carbon neutrality by 2050.

Future Implications:  The collaboration demonstrates the potential for public-private partnerships in driving Africa’s clean energy transition. Also this hybrid energy solution could serve as a model for sustainable mining across Africa, integrating renewable energy with industrial operations.
