Eritrea Launches 6MW Mini-Grid Project

Key Figures & Findings: Eritrea is set to expand its renewable energy infrastructure with a 6 MW mini-grid project in Teseney, funded through a $19.5 million African Development Bank (AfDB) grant under the Desert to Power framework. The initiative, managed by the Ministry of Energy, Eritrea Electricity Corporation (EEC), and local firms, also includes additional 3 MW mini-grids in Kerekebet and Barentu, bringing the total new capacity to 12 MW. The project aims to deliver stable electricity to 235,000 Eritreans, including power for 160 schools and 90 health centers in the Gash Barka region.

Statistics & Insights: The mini-grid systems will supply power to small-scale farms, agro-processing zones, and water supply systems, supporting economic growth and service delivery. Additionally, 25 local companies will receive training and equipment, ensuring long-term sustainability and local job creation.

Future Implications: If successful, this initiative could reduce Eritrea’s reliance on diesel generators, pave the way for further decentralized renewable energy investments, and significantly improve electrification rates in off-grid communities.
