Eskom Restores Koeberg Unit 2 to Grid

Key Figures & Findings: Eskom has successfully returned Koeberg Unit 2 to service, adding 930MW of baseload power to South Africa’s grid. The unit was taken offline due to a steam leak on the reheat system, but Eskom’s nuclear safety protocols ensured a safe and efficient restoration. Meanwhile, Unit 1 is undergoing scheduled maintenance and life-extension upgrades as part of Eskom’s long-term operational plan.

Statistics & Insights: Koeberg’s life-extension project will allow Unit 1 to operate until 2044, with Unit 2’s license extension pending approval before its November 2025 expiration. If granted, both units will continue providing 1,860MW of nuclear power for another two decades. Eskom has also replaced three steam generators in Unit 2, ensuring safety and efficiency improvements.

Future Implications: If Unit 2’s license extension is approved, Koeberg will continue to provide reliable, low-carbon electricity for at least two more decades, reducing South Africa’s dependence on coal. This move aligns with Eskom’s Just Energy Transition strategy, securing affordable and sustainable
