Eskom's Komati Solar Transition Project

Key Figures & Findings: Eskom, South Africa's power utility, has initiated plans to convert Komati Power Station, a coal facility from the 1960s, into a renewable energy hub. As part of this transition, Eskom has released a tender for an engineering, procurement, and construction (EPC) contract to develop a 72 MW solar photovoltaic (PV) system. The project will integrate a single-axis tracker system, transforming the site into a sustainable energy producer. Komati, once boasting a 1 GW coal capacity, is now a focal point for Eskom’s renewable energy ambitions.
Statistics & Insights: The proposed solar system, spanning four parcels of land near Middelburg and Bethel, is part of a broader strategy to repurpose existing infrastructure for renewable energy. Bids are due by February 13, 2025, at 10 a.m. South African Standard Time.
Future Implications: If implemented successfully, this project could set a precedent for repurposing other coal facilities in South Africa, contributing significantly to renewable energy targets by 2025. Such projects might also reduce the country’s reliance on coal.
