Eskom Seeks IPP Partner for Renewables

Key Figures & Findings: South Africa’s national utility, Eskom Holdings SOC Ltd, has issued a formal Invitation to Tender (ITT) seeking firms with proven experience in developing renewable energy ventures. The goal is to establish an agile, independently governed renewable energy subsidiary. This new unit will spearhead Eskom’s pivot from a coal-heavy supply to a sustainable and competitive energy company, aligning with both national and international decarbonization goals. Eskom CEO Dan Marokane emphasized that this move is central to their turnaround plan, ensuring energy security while preparing for a diversified energy future. The initiative is expected to encourage investment, technical partnerships, and green financing by drawing on South Africa’s rich solar and wind potential.
Statistics & Insights: The tender closes on May 7, 2025, and will span a 12-month support period. Applicants must demonstrate a strong history in IPP structuring, project delivery via PPP and SPV frameworks, and expertise in financial modeling and emissions reduction strategies.
Future Implications: If successful, this effort could result in a fully operational subsidiary by early 2026, accelerating clean energy deployment and positioning Eskom to meet climate targets. Through more efficient project execution and knowledge transfer, it may also improve grid resilience, attract foreign investment, and reduce load-shedding.
