Ethiopia-Kenya Grid Adopts HVDC

Key Figures & Findings: The $1.26 billion Ethiopia-Kenya electricity highway linking Wolayta-Sodo in Ethiopia to Suswa in Kenya launched in 2023 has recently integrated HVDC (High Voltage Direct Current) technology to optimize energy transmission efficiency over 1,045 km. Supported by the African Development Bank, World Bank, and Agence Française de Développement, the project connects hydroelectric power from Ethiopia with Kenya's geothermal and wind energy. Ethiopian Electric Power (EEP) and Kenya Electricity Transmission Company (KETRACO) lead operations, citing HVDC as essential for reducing energy losses and enhancing cross-border grid stability.

Statistics & Insights: The transmission line carries up to 2,000 MW of renewable energy annually, minimizing losses and increasing the grid's reliability.  It aims to support Kenya's industrial development and Ethiopia’s surplus energy export, reducing energy losses and enhancing grid reliability.

Future Implications: By 2030, HVDC integration could foster cross-border energy trade in East Africa, and improve power access,  energy independence, and environmental sustainability.
