Gabon Launches First Utility Solar Plant

Key Figures & Findings: Gabon has inaugurated its first utility-scale solar project, the Ayémé PV plant, located 30 km from Libreville Gabon’s capital. Developed by Solen SA Gabon, a subsidiary of Solen Renewable Dubai, the plant has an initial capacity of 11 MW and plans to expand to 30 MW under a Power Purchase Agreement with Société d'Energie et d'Eau du Gabon (SEEG). President Brice Oligui Nguema underscored the plant's significance for sustainable energy development and combating climate change.

Statistics & Insights: The Ayémé plant's expansion is expected to boost Gabon’s solar capacity significantly. The plant contributes to reducing the country’s reliance on hydropower (47.7%), natural gas (35%), and oil (16.9%), with solar projected to supply a greater share of energy needs by 2026.

Future Implications: By 2026, the expanded plant could supply up to 10% of Gabon’s electricity, fostering economic development and setting a renewable energy benchmark for Central Africa.
