Ghana Expands Tsatsadu Hydro Power Plant
Key Figures & Findings:
Ghana has completed Phase II of the Tsatsadu micro-hydro power plant in Alavanyo, Hohoe District. Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia commissioned the expansion, which adds 75 kW to the original 45 kW capacity established in 2020. Constructed entirely by Ghanaian engineers from the Bui Power Authority (BPA), this project is part of the government’s efforts to diversify its energy sources beyond oil and gas. BPA has also developed a 5 MW solar farm at the Bui Dam, underscoring its commitment to green energy initiatives.
Statistics & Insights:
The Tsatsadu power plant now has a total capacity of 120 kW, with plans for further micro-hydro projects. BPA has announced an ambitious goal to introduce 2,000 MW of solar power to the national grid, supporting job creation through local manufacturing of solar panels.
Future Implications:
The success of Tsatsadu and other renewable initiatives could lower consumers' energy costs, reduce Ghana's dependence on traditional power sources, and enhance energy security and sustainability for the future.
