Ghana Pushes for Renewable Energy Fund

Key Figures & Findings: Ghana’s Minister of Energy, Hon. John Abdulai Jinapor, has proposed the creation of a renewable energy fund to accelerate Africa’s energy transition. Speaking at the Africa Prosperity Dialogue 2025, he emphasized the necessity of reliable, affordable, and sustainable energy for the continent’s economic growth. Jinapor highlighted that approximately 600 million Africans lack electricity access, with 900 million deprived of clean cooking solutions. He stated, “Africa’s energy future cannot be shaped by individual countries alone and by working in isolation. Energy is the lifeblood of Africa’s single market. And we need to collaborate and work together.”

Statistics & Insights: Despite its abundant renewable resources, sub-Saharan Africa remains heavily dependent on non-renewable energy sources. Ghana plans to use 100% gas to power its energy and make significant investments in solar, wind, and mini-hydro projects.

Future Implications: The proposed renewable energy investment and green transition fund could mobilize both domestic and international resources to enhance renewable infrastructure and promote clean technologies across the continent.
