Ghana's Bui Solar Plant Expansion

Key Figures & Findings:
Ghana’s Bui Power Authority (BPA) has unveiled Africa’s first floating solar photovoltaic (PV) plant, a significant innovation for renewable energy development in the region. Situated on the Bui Reservoir, this project combines solar technology with existing hydropower capabilities to create an efficient, hybrid energy solution. This innovative project integrates renewable energy with hydropower infrastructure, ensuring efficient land use and boosting the country’s renewable energy capacity

Statistics & Insights:
The floating solar plant currently contributes 5 MW to Ghana’s energy grid, with an ambitious expansion goal of 250 MW. Paired with the 400 MW output from the Bui Hydropower Dam, this hybrid system enhances grid stability while pushing Ghana closer to its renewable energy target of 10% of electricity generation by 2030.

Future Implications:
By leveraging its natural water bodies, Ghana could set a regional precedent for floating solar technology, potentially transforming its energy sector. If successful, this project may attract further investments in hybrid renewable systems across Africa by 2025
