Ghana, Switzerland Launch Island Mini-Grids

Key Figures & Findings:
The Government of Ghana, in collaboration with Switzerland, has commissioned a 253.26 kWp solar mini-grid system to electrify three previously off-grid island communities—Aflivie, Alorkpem, and Azizakpe—in the Ada East District. Funded under the Ghana Energy Sector Support Project, the initiative marks a milestone for Ghana’s clean energy drive, with Aflivie hosting the country’s largest single mini-grid at 110 kWp. Minister of Energy and Green Transition, John Abdullah Jinapor, emphasized the broader vision: full electrification of all 200 islands and 2,000 lakeside communities. Swiss Ambassador Simone Giger reaffirmed Switzerland’s support, citing the project as a model under the Swiss-Ghana Article Six Cooperative Agreement linked to the Paris Agreement.
Statistics & Insights:
The project is expected to benefit around 3,700 residents and raise Ghana’s installed renewable energy capacity to approximately 260 MW.
Future Implications:
If the government’s roadmap progresses as planned, over 250,000 Ghanaians could gain electricity access through island mini-grids by 2030. Switzerland’s continued partnership may also catalyze further clean energy investments aligned with Ghana’s climate and development targets.
