Globeleq, Rainbow Energy Finalise BESS Project

Key Figures & Findings: Globeleq, a leading African independent power producer owned by British International Investment and Norfund, has reached commercial close on the 153 MW/612 MWh Red Sands Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) in partnership with African Rainbow Energy a South African-based energy investment company focused on clean and renewable energy assets across the continent. Signed with South Africa’s Department of Electricity and Energy and the National Transmission Company South Africa (NTCSA), the agreement secures Red Sands as the largest standalone battery project in Africa to reach commercial close. Located in the Northern Cape, the facility aims to address grid congestion and boost dispatchable capacity for the national grid.

Statistics & Insights: The project spans five hectares and is the fifth awarded under South Africa’s Energy Storage IPP programme. It will store power generated during off-peak periods and discharge during peak demand, offering 153 MW of capacity and 612 MWh of storage to support grid stability.

Future Implications: If operational by 2026, Red Sands could significantly strengthen South Africa’s grid flexibility and serve as a reference model for large-scale battery storage across the continent. The project may also accelerate climate finance flows and battery adoption under future procurement rounds.
